Hello,

There is an central auth. for control domain name ICANN, which allows Various registry to run different extensions. e.g.

Verisign (.com / .net)
PIR (.org)
Afilias (.info)

ICANN is a non profit organisation, every domain you register 20 cent go to ICANN to control / development Domain industry / internet.

Apart from that Registry fees is there which is different for every extension, like for .com, Verisign charge 6.86 USD, this amount is used to maintain your domain by registry, when someone open your site from any part of world, a query goes from your browser to registry servers and they direct that domain to server your site hosted.

Maintaining that traffic and data, with security they charge this amount.

Registry dont allow to sell directly to customer, why ? may be they will get monopolise or may be they not able to serve in every part of world.

To overcome this ICANN allows few companies who can book the domains, which called ICANN accredited Registrar.

These registrar charge you from 7.5 USD - 15 USD / yr. for domain.
They provide you the interfaces to manage your domain names, contact info etc.

Regards,

Vinay

Domain names are needed because it's easier to remember say, microsoft.com than 207.46.197.32 or yahoo.com - 209.131.36.158

The registrars pay a fee to ICANN who coordinate the DNS servers. As well as the annual fee, around 20 - 25c goes to ICANN for each domain you register.

If you can remember lots of ip addresses then you've no need to use domain names, computers don't use them - just us humans. Typing 207.46.197.32 in your browseer address bar gets you to the same place as typing microsoft.com

Some people don't bother registering domain names and just use their server's IP addresss. However, as at least one person on Yahoo Answers found out, that doesn't make them private, it just means you need to know the IP address rather than remembering a domain name.
